More news about the EU and VAT

campaignThis is further to my post yesterday, concerning the imposition of VAT on various aspects of European residents’ dealings with Second Life.

In the comments to that, one reader pointed out that there’s already an e-petition for UK citizens:

There is already a relevant e-petition (SL isn’t the only internet service to be hit by this!) :

At the moment, this has only 25 signatures. Surely we Brits can do better than that???

However, the e-petition* is only one aspect (and doesn’t address the issue that a new form of entrepreneurship is being disadvantaged for Europeans against the rest of the world).

This post on SLEx forums from Montana Corleone gives a very useful list of contact addresses and information on how to set up a Europe petition.

I suggest that, over the next few days, we think of how we would actually word such a petition, then put it up and start promoting it. At the same time, we should be looking at the wording of letters to be sent as well.

* Petitions have long been sent to the Prime Minister by post or delivered to the Number 10 door in person. UK citizens can now both create and sign petitions on the Downing Street website too, giving them the opportunity to reach a potentially wider audience and to deliver their petition directly to Downing Street.

Does it work? Well, one million signatories haven’t convinced the government to drop the idea of road charging.
