Second Life Trip Tips

SL Trips and TipsToday’s discovery isn’t a wonderful new store or a hot new designer. It is, a little unusually, a website: Second Life Trip Tips.

I discovered it when I learned that they had linked to us – and were featuring a very kind review of Prim Perfect on their pages. So of course I browsed to see what they were offering to readers too – and the answer is … lots of goodies!

The site is run by Kalisten VanDornan, quite clearly a splendid chap who describes himself as “Explorer, 19th Century Gentleman, Tesla scientist”, and DiGi Zeta, who tells us she is a “Day Tripper and Crafty Generalist”.

They have pulled together a fascinating collection of sites and information; as well as a list of sites to visit, they have sensible information on First Places to Go, Second Life Etiquette, Famous SL places, Core Info, Fun InWorld Activities and many, many more. Some of their advice is unexpected; they suggest, for example, that events held in SL libraries are an excellent way to meet interesting people and become acclimatised – which makes a real change to the usual recommendations to visit clubs!

There’s a definite steampunk Victorian slant to the information, and Caledon receives a great many approving mentions (and indeed, why not? It deserves them) but other areas (Goth and furry culture, for example) receive less coverage, which is a pity.

The site has a splendidly individual style in the tradition of the best travel guide books, and I particularly loved the Victorian gentleman indomitably checking out the world of Second Life – the account of surfing at Chi, for example, gives a great deal of interesting and valuable information and also supplies some terrific images of Kalisten himself solemnly surfing in a magnificent blue and white striped bathing costume and a boater, with his trademark cigar firmly clamped between his lips.
