As winter swiftly approaches (or has it arrived?) for those of us in the northern hemisphere, it seems many Second Life citizens are turning their thoughts to bundling up in warm sweaters and sitting in front of a cozy fire, sipping hot cocoa. Not me! As it gets colder here, I long for the crash of waves and a light-filled beach house. And a beach house demands the right beach house furniture. While I enjoy the fun, Miami color palette, for a restful retreat, I prefer furniture made of light, airy neutrals that blend with the environment. When I discovered the “Beach” collection at Going Coastal! (slurl) a few months ago, I became one happy beach bum. Simple, clean lines, enough texture to keep the visuals interesting, and color palettes that allow the pieces a flexibility to move beyond the beach into a casual, contemporary home.

I recently headed over to Going Coastal! to see if Tifosa Twang has released anything new. I was delighted to discover her “Dwell” collection. This set still has the clean, contemporary lines found in the Beach furniture, but with a funkier flair. The base fabric, a muted lime green, contrasts well with the taupe palette of the patterned accent fabric. The element I find most appealing is the legs of the chairs — there are only three. The legs create a kind of tripod effect, and the plank style in dark wood makes the look very contemporary. I like to see a designer take advantage of the Second Life environment and do something difficult to execute in real life.

I only have one minor problem with the chairs in the two collections – and it is a problem I have with much of the furniture in Second Life. When I sit down, they are so much larger than I am that I feel lost. I suspect it is one reason why our avatars tend to be unnaturally tall in Second Life. Nevertheless, Twang uses a nice set of poses in her pieces, and I don’t have to adjust them to make my frame fit. Perfectly beachy.
