The HeART of the Orkneys

Heart 08 Art Exhibition receptionThat’s right – not a spelling mistake. Because the wonderful Orkney Island sims (the sims of the month in this month’s edition of the magazine) have been staging a rather special art exhibition at the Kirkness Art Centre, entitled HEART 08, No End of Things in the Heart.

This exhibition revolved around the inaugural Hinterland Estates Arts Prize. The objective of the competition was to promote and encourage Second Life as a medium for the arts, and the overarching theme of the competition was, appropriately enough, the landscape, community, mythology and history of The Northern Isles of Scotland.

The judging committee consisted of four members selected by Hinterland Estates and Saffia Widdershins, editor of Prim Perfect, was among their number.

“It’s a fascinating exhibition,” says Saffia, “and I really would encourage as many people as possible to go. I think that, like me, you’ll be awed at the different interpretations that the artists have put upon the theme. The standard of work is extremely high, and the creativity phenomenal.”

In the end, with the four judges working independently, the final result was announced at a reception on May 25th.

In Joint 3rd place:
The winning entryCallipygian Christensen: The Sea is Always Close (No. 9 in the exhibition)
and
MarillaAnne Slade: At Dawn, They Rest (No. 15)

Runner up, in 2nd place was:
MarillaAnne Slade: A World Unto Itself (No. 17)

and the overall winner, in 1st place was:
Blue Tsuki: Shetland Between the Waves (No. 18)

The exhibition continues until the end of May, and we really would urge everyone to go!

Dining Room in our Star Prize cottageAnd while you’re in the Orkneys, why not explore our Star Prize of the month? This is a gorgeous house created by Kittie Munro, in the style of an Orkney fisherman’s cottage, but now owned by an Orkney teleworker. There are wonderful references to the Orkneys throughout, and to the work of the famous Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This is a house really worth seeing – and one lucky reader will shortly be winning it for their very own!

(And when you’re there – do have a look at the books on the bookcase in the dining room area -Kittie’s attention to detail is wonderful!
