The First Thanksgiving

This week, people in America are gathering with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving.  To get into the spirit of the holiday, or perhaps to learn a bit more about it, consider a visit to the New England sims.  Currently docked next to the Nantucket theater is a model of the Mayflower, the ship that carried the Pilgrims to the New World in 1620.   The model was built by a descendant of those Pilgrims, Lora Chadbourne, when she could not find a Thanksgiving venue on the grid.  She shared her knowledge of the history of Thanksgiving with a talk at the Nantucket theater on Saturday, November 22, and the transcript of the talk is available as a notecard from a vendor on the dock.

The ship is designed for a self-guided tour with educational signs posted throughout the ship.  During my visit, I could really feel how small and cramped it must have been during the voyage across the Atlantic, but the ship herself is a beauty from the coils of rope on deck to the large jack screw that held the ship together after she was damaged in a storm.  A Thanksgiving feast has been set out on a long wooden table next to the stage, and everyone is encouraged to share in the feast.   There are also boxes of period clothing on the dock if you wish to celebrate in appropriate costume.

The ship will remain in dock until Saturday, November 29.
