Saffia and Elrik toured the Dresden Art Gallery, a fantastic re-creation of the world famous gallery in Dresden, in the eastern part of Germany. The gallery has been created in amazing detail, to give you the experience of not only seeing some world famous paintings, but also of experiencing them in context.

We set up a special Meta Makeover studio in the Gobelin Salon in the heart of the gallery where a stusio audience joined us to meet two of the key people behind the project – Roy Philbin (in real life Michael Schumann of Second Interest, the group behind the project) and Goldie LeSuere (in real life Stephan Keisers, who has been project manager and team leader on the Gallery).

They told us the fascinating story of how the gallery was built – and shared some quite stunning statistics: the Dresden Gallery in Second Life already gets 60,000 visitors a year – which is over 10% of what the real gallery received (500,000 per annum). But, even more significant is the length of time the average visitor spends there. It’s forty minutes per visit – and that is on a par with the average museum and art gallery visit in the real world, which is 45 minutes.

In the second half of the programme, Saffia and Elrik looked at different parts of the gallery. While Saffia took in some of the highlights, and then visited the early Renaissance German gallery, Elrik visited the special Canaletto exhibition and the wonders of the camera obscura. With over 750 paintings all captured in high resolution in the gallery, we’ll only had time to show you a small number of them. But that was all right – because what we really wanted to do is to encourage you to come and see the paintings for yourselves – and maybe support the gallery by buying a few to take home!
