Earth Week in Second Life

Earth Week
Earth Week

Earth Week starts today in Second Life.  A full information pack and an information hub to wear (which will take you seamlessly around the different events on offer) is available at different locations across the grid – including outside our offices on Oliveto.  And each day, we’ll post a list of that day’s events on our blog.

The first Earth Week Festival in Second Life builds from the world wide celebration of Earth Day on 22 April. Organised by the Imagine Network, Earth Day embraces shared values and celebrates our efforts toward creating a sustainable human presence on the Earth. Events held around the world recognize and honour our life-giving environment.

Earth Week in Second Life reflects this excitement in many sims across our virtual world. There are discussions, concerts, art exhibits and tours.

Earth Week kicks off on Saturday April 18 at Avatar Action Centre, starting at 8am SLT with a whole range of events, include talks, poetry readings, shared stories, live music … and even a game show!

Then from 7pmSLT – midnight, you can enjoy the Earth Week Global Folk live music concert featuring musicians from around the world at Freestar Bay Isle.

Next, on Sunday 19th, the spotlight moves to Better World Island and the Centre for Water Studies, where there’ll be tours talks and more music!  This is followed by an Enchanted Evening of Music (and a scuba tour!) T Whisper’s Edge.

On April 20th, the focus shifts to Africa, and you’ll be able to tour African mangroves, among other events.

Tuesday 21 starts with events at HumLab Swedish University and the challenging and informative Green Ideation Quest by the University of Innsbruck. Then you can join in to celebrate our seas with a merfolk event and underwater concert.

Earth Day itself on April 22nd is shared with great programmes at Etopia and the launch of the new EcoCommons sim.

Aire at Ecologia hosts April 23 and Amnesty April 24. Earth Week at the Pocket takes us overnight.

On Saturday 25 April the festival moves to Virtual Native Lands for live music and a talk on the pow wow.

Earth Week festivities wrap up on Sunday April 26 with tours and a celebration of Greenpeace activities to protect the environment on Commonwealth Islands. But I must admit, I’ll be tempted by the Earth Week Quilting Bee from Midnight till 3pm SLT.

The Imagine Network

The Imagine Network works for a better world, with human rights, social and environmental justice for all. They work in Second Life, connecting people to people, group to group, and network to network. They are about awareness and imagination, rather than fundraising. Their events can be grid wide and multi-day. They aim to identify the root causes of the big toxic global problems facing us; to help find solutions; to help people act together in cooperation. They look to stimulate left and right brain; to seek inspiration and understanding, to use creativity and information. They issue an invitation to those particpating in Earth Week: “Join us! Be the change you want to see!
