Designing Worlds asks what the future holds for Second Life

Only a few weeks ago, in the wake of the Linden Lab lay-offs and the announcement of a major change of direction for the Second Life grid, Designing Worlds asked “Where Next for Second Life?” It seems to us that the changes that have happened since – the return of Philip Linden as temporary CEO and the ongoing problems facing residents make it timely to return to this issue with another studio show.

Join us in our Northpoint studio at 2pm SLT as we invite a panel of Second Live residents and commentators to express their view of recent events – and to share with us how they see the future. And we’ll be invited our audience to ask questions and make their points too.

Saffia and Elrik will be joined by:

Ignatius Onomatopoeia, aka Dr. Joe Essid of the Writing Center at the University of Richmond, where he teaches in the Departments of English as well as Rhetoric & Communication

Mal Burns, virtual worlds news aggregator, journalist and fellow broadcaster

Maxwell Graf is a much-loved and hugely talented creator, the owner of Rustica and formerly of the beautiful region of LagNMoor. He’s currently one of the leading developers in Blue Mars as well as continuing his work in Second Life.

Raven Haalan keeps himself active in Second Life as an writer, photographer, builder, artist and observer of virtual life (having recently introduced the term “Virtualism” to the discussion of art forms in the metaverse). In RL he has been a high tech entrepreneur and software development manager for over twenty five years, for companies large and small. He’s also a songwriter, photographer and illustrator

And, of course, you, the audience.

We’ll be discussing the reurn of Philip Linden and what this means for Second Life, what the change in focus on the residents will mean – and look at ideas for ways of dealing with some ongoing problems that Second Life faces, especially the violation of intellectual property rights, more commonly called content theft. We’ll be looking at how concern about this issue has been heightened by the recent deletion of Maxwell Graf’s sim LagNMoor, and the events that led up to it.
