Prim Perfect Jigsaw: The Magic of Second Life at SL8B

After responding yesterday to the announcement from Linden Lab of the new formulation of celebrations of the Second Life Birthday, I thought it was time for a jigsaw from last year’s celebrations.

The picture doesn’t attempt to show the best of SL8B (although there are some rather cool constructions there). Rather its a picture of the randomness of it – how, when you are walking along, you will suddenly see something that makes you gasp, makes you laugh or even occasionally moves you deeply.

Will the community-based (as well as community-themed) events this year have anything like the same impact?  I doubt it very much.  The scale and scope will be divided – the hundred plus volunteers who were waiting eagerly to move into action as greeters, information givers and cheerleaders 24/7 are hardly going to be able to do the same job scattered across the grid.  The transportation cars that whisk you around on grand tours of the site won’t be replicated by even the most ingenious teleport hud that takes you to the different events.  The artists whose creations became must sees for everyone visiting the Birthday site will exhibit to the arts community; 5the musicians who one might discover serendipitously at the Birthday site will go on slowly, patiently, building a fan base at small gigs and events.

I suspect, for the real community event, where we will see what communities uniting can really achieve, we will have to wait for the Relay for Life weekend.

Anyway – the jigsaw!
