In this episode, we pay a visit to the culmination of Relay for Life of Second Life with the amazing RFL Weekend which this year had the theme of Hope Floats – and also marked the year when Second Life reach a Relay total of US$5,000,000!

Every year, in Second Life, there is a months’ long campaign for Relay for Life, the major event of the American Cancer Society. The aim is partly to raise funds – often for international projects – and an incredible amount has been raised over the years. But it’s also to raise awareness of the different forms of cancer and to offer support for people with cancer, and those caring for them. Second Life residents form themselves into teams, large and small, and set out to raise funds by selling things they’ve created and holding events, which may be parties, or games or contests or many different things!

There are also megaevents – some of which we cover in the show – like the Second Life Living Expo, or Fantasy Faire.

And all these event culminate in the Relay for Life Weekend when people gather to walk a track, to accomplish the goals of Relay: to fundraise, learn and support in a variety of ways. And here in Second Life, in what became one of the largest Relay for Life events in the world during the pandemic, people gather, building trackside camps and designer regions, and walking the track for one weekend. Only the camps, and the avatars, may be a little more varied than you’d normally see in real life!

In this episode, we visit the very special area that was created to host those campsites, designer regions – and more – that made up the Relay for Life of Second Life weekend. This show is an extensive mixture of interviews and explorations.

We talk to people who worked on the organisation of the event: Mama P Alter, Trager Alter and Stingray Raymaker; and three of the people behind the stunning designer region RFL Remission, Crito Galtier, Tymus Tenk and Truck Meredith.
