New Prim Perfect: Devil in the Details

washstand by Jeannie Moonflower There has been a slight delay in the publication of the 3rd issue of Prim Perfect, due to circumstances beyond our control.

In the meantime, I’d like to share this picture with you of a washstand.

This piece comes from our Star Competition of the Month, which this month is a castle designed by Qabalah Quintus of Castles by Q, and the interior designed and furnished by Jeannie Moonflower of Bygone Days. One of the many beautiful pieces you’ll find in the castle is this classic washstand.

The detailing on it is quite astonishing – as you can see even better in the enlarged version of this image here on Flickr. Aside for the intricate wood carving (shown vividly on the splayed cabriole legs), there is the Delft tiling that forms the splashboard as well as the floral, inset ewer that would hold the water.

But what I love about this piece is that … it’s not perfect.

Very often in Second Life, all we see is utterly pristine and new – even when it’s a loving reproduction of an antique piece. But Jeannie here has given us a piece that is stained with the patina of age. The ewer is fine … but the discolouration of the wood suggests its age, while the tiles that form the splashboard are a little stained and uneven in their setting. One of two might even be cracked. It’s this, for me, that makes the piece live.

There’s also the fact that when I was a girl, my grandparents had a piece rather like that …

There are many other delights to explore in the castle – many of which are described in the magazine. So be sure to get your copy! And remember -20% of the sale of each magazine will be going to charity.
