Greeting and Meeting

Quixote's: ExteriorHave you ever wished there were more places in Second Life where you could just … well, be sociable? Somewhere quiet and pleasant where you could sit and talk? Somewhere that wasn’t a club where you were expected to dance, or a romantic venue where you were expected to … well, be romantic?

Perhaps you might like Quixote’s.

Located in a quiet corner of Better World Island (which, incidentally, was our sim of the month in last month’s issue), Quixote’s proudly announces itself as “a friendly hideout for windmill tilters” (and, in case you want to try, there is a windmill just around the corner, and a modern windmill for generating energy at the top of the hill … ). Riversong Garden, the Curator of Better World Island, describes it as a sort of pub – although it is also available for non-profit organisations to use as a meeting venue, in return for a donation.

The build is very Spanish in style, and actually one of the oldest on the Better World sim. Many of the furnishing pick up on this theme too, but in a understated way; you don’t go in expecting a tapas bar. The walls are a rich blue – a lovely shade that actually gives warmth rather than appearing cool or even cold.

Downstairs, the pub atmosphere is perhaps strongest, although to this Brit it did seem a little more reminiscent of a good wholefood cafe, perhaps in somewhere like Glastonbury or Wells. There is a welcoming fire, and benches and tables set ready with food – just the place to enjoy a beer or a cider (an English hard cider, for preference) with some good sharp cheese and pickle for lunch after a tramp round Better World Island to see the sights – such as Camp Darfur and the Center for Water Studies. There’s even music, in shape of a Spanish guitar which can be played (or caused to play for you).

Quixote's: UpstairsUpstairs, the ambience is more relaxed. Sofas and comfy chairs are arranged in groups that invite small groups to sit together and chat. Again the furnishings pick up the Spanish theme, but in a low key way.  It’s a delightful room forjust hangin’ and chatting with friends.

Finally, a little hidden, there’s the garage bar – a proper bar where I am sure real alcohol os served.  If you can persuade the  door to stay up (as I eventually managed too), you get a lovely view of the back of the Center for Water Studies.

All in all, this combination of good spaces makes Quixote’s a good place to visit with your friends – or to hold your next non-profit meeting!
