Once Upon A Grid…

A powerful Emperor ruled over a magnificent sim known as New China. Each day the Emperor would rise, gaze out the windows of his elegant pagoda, then take to his plush wingback chair to conduct the business of the day. His beautiful daughter named Blue would greet the Emperor each morning at breakfast, which she was always in a hurry to finish. In spite of the fact that the pagoda was elegant and comfortable, she could not wait to slip out the front door.

Free from the confines of the pagoda and distant from the business affairs that occupied the Emperor through his day, she would run barefoot through lush grass, read books beneath the shade of the gracefully curved willow tree, and pick apples for her lunch, which she would eat while sitting on the edge of the bridge that led away from the family estate, swinging her bare feet to let her toes skim the cool waters.

The Emperor thought his daughter to be beautiful, but careless and flighty. However, he did not worry about her future, and did not scold her about her daily flights from responsibility. The Emperor was satisfied that in time Blue would be the respectable wife of a successful mesh Builder. Being a shrewd and businesslike Emperor, he had left nothing to chance and a deal had already been struck. Unbeknownst to Blue, she had been promised to the Builder to be his wife one day.

But true love does not always pay attention to respectable plans. The Emperor held in his employment a humble Scripter, who would come to the pagoda every afternoon to show the Emperor his work and receive new instructions. He was a very talented scripter, and helped keep New China running smoothly. Occasionally he’d indulge the Emperor’s personal whims, such as his handiwork in the exquisite music box which graced the entryway of the Pagoda, sweetly welcoming and charming all visitors. Every evening when the scripting work was done, he would be given a silver coin and a cup of wine for his labors. After partaking of the wine with the Emperor, the Scripter would cross the bridge that led back to the village.

Along his way the Scripter would always look for glimpses of Blue under the Willow tree, or picking her apples, and if he was very lucky, she would be lingering at the bridge. On those days they would talk of  their hopes and dreams and slowly but surely Blue and the Scripter fell in love. One afternoon, the Scripter drew a jewel case from his coat pocket and pressed it into Blue’s hands. “It is empty, Blue, but someday I will fill it with jewels for you.” Blue kissed her sweetheart and exclaimed, “I need nothing but your love, and the case is already filled with that! It is enough.”

One fateful day the Emperor called Blue to sit at his side, and he told her what her future would be with the Builder.  Blue burst into tears and begged to be released from the promise, but the Emperor was firm in his conviction. The Emperor knew he must take steps to keep the promise intact, and had a high fence built to keep her confined to his estate.

But years of climbing the apple tree for the juiciest fruit had taught Blue enough that she could scale the fence easily. She scrambled over and ran to the bridge. Leaning on the rail, under the soft light of a string of lanterns that spanned the bridge, Blue cried tears that fell into the river below, causing perfect circles to ripple across the light reflecting in the water.

And that is how the Scripter found her that day, as he arrived for a day’s work only to find himself barred from the pagoda.

“Blue, I have a plan. My father left me a small cottage. It is across the sea, but if you would choose to run away with me, we can be happy together there.”

Blue kissed the Scripter profusely and the young lovers fled that very moment.

As they crossed the sea in a hired boat, the Scripter persuaded the Captain to marry them at sea, and the happy couple arrived on the far shore as Man and Wife. Life in the cottage was sweet. The Scripter purchased a fishing rod, and soon was bringing home fresh salmon for dinner each evening. After supper, Blue and the Scripter would often light an incense burner arranged nicely on a small table, and while gazing at the fragrant curling smoke, would contemplate the path that brought them both to this place of bliss.

But the ship’s Captain was a greedy man who knew the Emperor would pay dearly for news of his daughter’s whereabouts. Upon his return to the shore of New China, he did indeed sell a small map showing the location of the Scripter’s cottage to the Emperor.

Blinded by betrayal and rage, the Emperor sent his soldiers to kill the newlyweds. As the troops charged across the meadow leading up the to cottage, the Celestial Asset Servers took pity upon their plight and turned the couple into doves. Each and every feather on their new bodies was a magical Flight Feather. Far, far away they flew together, leaving the Emperor’s astonished army behind.
