Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 20th February, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, when we’ll be visiting the fascinating Second Life Museum of Nuclear Warfare.

This is the first episode of a two part show (the second will be shown later in the series) as we discover a part of the wealth of information and installations that the Museum hosts.

You might expect it to be all about the weapons, but in fact it’s much broader than that, as we discover through talking to the Director and Curator of the Museum, OtakuSenpai Button.

In this first show we explore the reasons why Otaku established the Museum before we take a look at the background to the Manhattan Project which led to the development of the first atomic bomb and – subsequently – to the two bombs that were dropped on Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We then look at the work of nuclear reactors, and learn something of the background to nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

It’s a fascinating show – both in terms of the content Otaku has gathered, and also in terms of demonstrating how Second Life can be used for a learning experience.
