This weekend saw the launch of an exciting new venue in Second Life – the Museum of Second Life Photography, located on a new sim, Fashionista (more of that below).

The building is a fascinating one, circular and constructed so that photgraphs can be displayed on many different levels.

For the openning exhibition, by a group of top Second Life photographers, only the lowest levels are used, but that;s eneough to intrigue the viewer and make him or her imagine how even more spectacular this displays have the potential to become!

The current exhibition is, in itself, wonderful.  The opening artists are:

Cienega Soon
Kee Llewellyn
Keith Extraordinaire (one of the designers at our fantstic Caer Blanco sim – which you can read about in this month’s magazine)
Monroe Snook (one of the winners in the Orange Island Fashiion Photocontest that Prim Perfect was a sponsor for)
Trinidad Anatine (another winner in the Orange Island Fashiion Photocontest– in fact, the winner of Picture of the Week – and now, as a result of that, a photographer for Prim Perfect)

As the museum moves forward, one or two photographers will be asked to exhibit on a monthly basis, while some will be invited to become part of the permanent collection.  “All will have passion and a story to tell,” says Mariposa Upshaw, the creator of the museum.

Additionally,  a range of striking works of sculpture have been placed around the beautifully landscaped grounds of the museum.

“Each sculpture is again representative of an artist with passion, dedication, whimsy and soul,” says Mariposa.

The sculptors are:
Gwen Carillon
Glyph Graves
Eme10 Wind
Cheen Pitney
Steve Kilby
Pumpkin Tripsa
elros Tuominen
Madcow Cosmos

About Mariposa Upshaw, Curator of the Museum of Second Life Photography
When she was asked to become the curator of the Museum of SL Photography by Yasmine Kidd, owner of the Fashionista sim, Mariposa was not looking to take on yet another project or, indeed, another curatorship as she was already curating Angel Dorei Museum and the Cetus Sculpture Park.

But Yasmine’s explanation of what she wanted the museum to be, coupled with Mariposa’s own friendships with some of Second Life’s finest photographers, is what convinced her to agree to curate the museum.

Yasmine wants to reach people who may not be familiar with SL Photography, to have a very special place to honour the top photographers in Second life, and to make sure photography and the artists received the recognition and exposure they deserve.

“She gave me the assignment to find the best of the best,” Mariposa explains.  “A rather daunting task, as everyone has their own definition of what “the best” is.  If you ask five different people to list the five best photographers, you will more than likely receive five different answers.  When searching for the group that would open the museum, I tried to keep many aspects in mind, but one thing that was the overwhelming qualification for me was and shall be, are these artists passionate about what they do?  When you gaze upon their images, are you moved? Do you think, do you feel? Do their images draw you in, do they have a story to tell?”

And has she succeeded in finding this?  As she says herself, “This initial group of photographers are definitely skilled, some at the beginning of their artistic journey, some with more experience – but they all have passion, a point of view, varying styles – some are involved in education and passing their skills on to other artists; some are just compelled to make their art and share it.

“It is my hope that this special place  will continue to honor the artists that capture images and share them with us,” says Mariposa Upshaw.

About Fashionista Island
Fashionista Island is a new sim dedicated to creativity through fashion and the arts on SL.  Among the features on this island, created by Yasmine Kidd and Horris Fizcarraldo, are:

RUNWAY STADIUM – The largest runway in SL. And home to many amazing music events, such as U2 in SL!!!!

THE TOWER – Possibly the tallest continuous structure in SL. This architectural feat by the sim’s builder, Delerium Hannibal, contains an observation deck, a nightclub named Astarte by the great designer Gwen Carillon who did the Gossip Girls cafe and the Dragon’s cave for Meta Makeover, and CLOUDWALK, the highest runway in SL. All told, the structure is over 500 meters high.
