Cerridwen’s Cauldron, created by Elicio Ember, is one of the most beautiful places on the grid. It formed the setting for a key episode of The Blackened Mirror, and we’ve also filmed a good part of an episode of Designing Worlds there.
Now Elicio has created a beautiful new website – and it’s part of a planned redesign that will see the entire ground level of the island changed – Elicio is urging people to go now and take pictures of the ground level as it is now (temples, caverns and all) for their archives.
For me, one of the most stunning things about the Cauldron (in addition to the utterly gorgeous usage of colour) is the way Elicio creates a realistic fantasy. He is trained in both the visual arts and as an oceanographer – and he is at pains to create fantasy plants that are based on real life botanical specimens. As he says: “This gives the plants and trees (or other more alien looking plants) a ‘solidity’ that makes them more believable. Somewhat as if they could exist in a world or reality very close to our own. Same applies with architecture; I research ancient and modern cultures and architectural styles to achieve a look and feel. And well, being a hardcore gamer and geek also helps, of course.”
Do pay a visit before it closes – and also take a look at the lovely photos Honour Macmillan has taken over there for her blog.
