In this episode from our archives, we look back to a time when many new grids outside Second Life were flourishing. Many have now fallen away but – back in 2010 (ten years ago!), Heritage Key was one of the most exciting.
You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/371602588. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.
#087 Visiting Heritage Key – 01 June 2010 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.
Elrik and Saffia took a trip to this whole new grid – a spectacular, integrated display created by some of the best designers in virtual worlds.

Heritage Key was created by the team at Rezzable (who brought us the Greenies, the Black Swan and more in Second Life). It was designed to provide a series of powerfully immersive environments – and we explored different aspects with Viv Trafalgar, while Jon Himoff of Rezzable joined us in the studio to discuss the project.

One fascinating aspect was the work they were doing with Unity3D to create an introductory experience that makes use of a standard web browser to access this virtual world. Unity 3D is still popular with smaller, customised world developments – Sinewave Space and Daeden Limited use Unity in their constructions.

Sadly, Heritage Key is no longer with us – but this show gives you an opportunity to see some of their amazing creations! So do join us for a slice of history at 2pm SLT for the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams!

If you would like to learn more about some of the other grids that were thriving in 2010, the June 2010 issue of Prim Perfect magazine (available here at Calameo on the web) had a number of articles and interviews, Looking Beyond the Second Life Grid. Free inworld copies will be available at the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams.
