The town of Maytown – and the polluting power station beyond

Designing Worlds looks back to … the Deep Down Mine

Join us today, Monday 5th April at 2pm SLT in our beautiful studio in Garden of Dreams as we journey back into our Archives for a show first shown in May 2012 to the Virtual Mine, a fascinating project in Second Life, created by Sand Castles Studios, in association with the Deep Down Mine documentary film.

#DW163 Deep Down Mine – May 21st 2012 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/532746564. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT, Monday 25th February) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

Interview with Gianna Borgnine

This was a very prescient episode, as it looks at the issue of energy use and environmental damage. We talk to one of the makers of the documentary – Jen Gilomen – and to Gianna Borgnine of Sand Castle Studios, as we explore the background to the creation of this region in Second Life and the documentary, and then explore the area, looking at the issues it raises about the need for power, the cost of mountaintop mining, and the alternatives that could provide the needed power and employment, with far fewer environmental costs.

It makes for a fascinating show – so do come and join us at 2pm!

There’s also a special jigsaw of an image taken from the show, which you can do here!
